| 6343 Barrel Ramp Car (1961 - 1962) |

About This Railroad Work Car
The 6343 Barrel Ramp Car was introduced by Lionel in 1961 and was sold for two years (through 1962). This odd car is essentially a flatcar (mold #6424-11) with a gray superstructure to hold the six barrels provided. The 6343 is decorated with white heat-stamped lettering. The lower frame rail projections further help to dress this otherwise plain-looking car.

Additional Details
The superstructure on the 6343 is the same ramp from the 342 Culvert Loader reflecting Lionel's attempt to use up their existing parts inventory. The 6343 always came with AAR trucks. The railing on the superstructure is fragile and many cars are found with cracked railings or with sections missing. In addition, the car came packaged with the trucks facing inward and to use the car, it was necessary to turn the trucks around. Because the box was short (no doubt a cost-savings attempt by Lionel), it was also necessary to turn the trucks back to their original position to put the car back into its original box! Many broken steps resulted from those procedures. For these reasons, it is not easy to find this car in collector-quality condition.
