614 Alaska NW2 Yard Switcher (1959 - 1960) |
---|
About This Diesel
The 614 Alaska EMD NW2 Yard Switcher was introduced by Lionel in 1959 and was sold for two years (through 1960). The 614 was painted royal-blue with yellow heat-stamped lettering and graphics (the cute, waving Eskimo figure under the window on each side). The 614 also has a sheet-metal frame with a center skirt plus front and rear end rails. This unit is unique among all postwar Lionel engines because of the yellow "dynamic brake superstructure" mounted on top of the motor cover in front of the cab. Two versions of this engine exists: one with a builder's plate on the side with the words "BUILT BY LIONEL" in blue, and the extremely rare variation with the same words and plate outlined in yellow.

Additional Details
The 614 Alaska switcher came with Magnetraction, a light, two non-operating couplers and a 2-position reversing unit. (There is no neutral, just forward and reverse.) The cab of the NW2 switchers with sheet-metal frames is mounted by means of a fixed metal tab in the back and a screw in the front. Unfortunately this poor design has resulted in many shattered cab fronts as owners have tightened the screw too much -- thus cracking the plastic. This diesel was designed to be used to jockey rolling stock around in a railroad yard. They are still used on the real railroads.
