3370 Sheriff & Outlaw Car (1961 - 1964)

About This Freight Car

The 3370 Wells Fargo (Western & Atlantic) Stock Car was introduced by Lionel in 1961 and was sold for four years (through 1964). This item is also known as the animated "Sheriff and Outlaw Car" and represents yet another clever invention by Lionel as they modified an existing body mold from their product line and devised an internal mechanism to create action for the operator. Alternately, the sheriff and outlaw raise their heads as if shooting at each other as the car moves down the tracks. The action results from a mechanical operation via an assembly of levers, a cam and a ratchet-type wheel. Since the action is not caused by any electrical components, if the train stops, so does the animation. The body of the car is unpainted green plastic with yellow heat-stamped lettering.

Additional Details

The only variations of this car involve the trucks. The most common version came with AAR trucks while a harder-to-find version was a component of "General" sets and came with arch-bar trucks.
